This has been all over the music blog scene…but I’ll add my two cents. Calvin Harris, one of those British(well he’s Scottish..) electro DJ singer types (think Hot Chip with a twist of LCD Soundsystem*…ish), apparently lost his laptop at Heathrow Airport. Not that big a deal for a famous musician right? He’ll just get a new one…who cares? Well apparently this laptop was kinda special. Special being the fact that Harris’ new album was on the computer’s hard drive.
Now, people will say…so he lost a copy. Big deal…worst thing that can happen is someone will find it and leak it. This is kind of true. Someone could definitely find it and leak it on the internet. If/when someone does, however, it will be the only place people will be able to get the album. Harris made no backups..nothing. Whoops!
I do feel sorry for the guy. I enjoyed his first album and I don’t doubt I would’ve and will enjoy his second. But come on. Only one copy? You’ve put seven months of your life into this thing. This thing that can easily be stored on multiple computers, flash drives, CDs, whatever (all of which he can personally keep if he’s worried about the album leaking). Even if, for some odd reason, Harris had no choice and there was only one copy. How could he leave it out of his sight, at an airport nonetheless? Something doesn’t make sense here.
Maybe he was unhappy with his album. Maybe he hadn’t even created an album yet. Maybe he ‘lost’ his computer to pin the blame on the airport and not on the fact that he had been unable to produce a solid followup to I Created Disco. Who knows (coonnssppirraccyyyy!). All I know is that I was looking forward to a followup and I’m going to wait a lot longer for one now. Boo.
*I am aware that LCD Soundsystem is an American band. Just want to get that out there in case it sounded confusing.
